Questions and Answers
Will XAware move to GPLv3 at some later date?
We are monitoring the community's response to the GPLv3 license. We may move to the GPLv3 license if and when it gains broad enough acceptance in the community. More information on the GPLv3 license is available from the Free Software Foundation at http://gplv3.fsf.org/
What license is used for the XAware Open Source Project?
XAware Release 5 is available under the Open Software Foundation approved GNU General Public License Version 2 GPLv2, see http://www.fsf.org/licensing/licenses/gpl-faq.html. XAware, Inc. also makes the software available under a commercial license. For more information see www.xaware.com
Does Release 5 include all of the functionality that is included in Release 4.5?
No. A few 4.5 features did not make the open source project mostly due to license restrictions. See 'About the Project' on the xaware.org home page for complete release 5 project information, status, features, and roadmap
Will Release 5 replace XAware Release 4.5?
Yes. XAware Release 5 replaces XAware Release 4.5 as the most current and full-featured release. New feature development going forward will focus on Release 5.   XAware, Inc. will continue to support current customers of prior XAware software releases under the terms of existing license and support agreements.
Why isn't XAware Release 4.5 being made available as Open Source?
XAware Release 4.5, and prior releases, includes some third party licensed code that is only available under licenses that are incompatible with GPL. This code has been removed and/or replaced in the XAware Open Source Project in order to enable Open Source release under the GPLv2 license.
If I currently use XAware Release 4.5, will my data integration projects also run on XAware 5 Open Source Project?
There are certain incompatibilities between older XAware versions and XAware 5, which may require existing design artifacts and metadata to be modified in order to execute properly on the XAware 5 Runtime Engine.  You can see this page in the wiki for more details on upgrading.
What support is available for XAware?
XAware is an open source project with a vibrant user community. so XAware developers and users have several available support options.  Community Support: In addition to tutorials and technical documentation, users can search the wiki for information, or post questions directly to the XAware user and development community on the forums.  You can also view tutorials and webinars to learn how to use the product. You can sign up for a Quick Start training to help you get started as well. Commercial Support: XAware Inc. provides support and professional services for the XAware open source project.  To find out more about training, consulting, or subscriptions offered, visit our xaware.com Services page.
Is there a Commercial License available for the XAware 5 Open Source Project software?
Yes there is. If you need a commercial license, or think you do, please contact us at www.xaware.com for more information.
Given that XAware 5 will be licensed under the GPLv2, is there any risk to my proprietary applications or data being subject to the terms of the GPL?
Many companies use GPLv2 licensed software with proprietary applications and have done so for many years. However, the scope of the GPLv2 is uncertain. The GPLv2 requires that the software licensed under the GPLv2 and any modifications of the GPLv2 licensed software must be licensed under the GPLv2. Modifications are defined as “derivative works” which is a specially defined term under United States copyright law: “it is a work based upon one or more preexisting works, such as a translation, musical arrangement, dramatization, fictionalization, motion picture version, sound recording, art reproduction, abridgment, condensation, or any other form in which a work may be recast, transformed, or adapted. A work consisting of editorial revisions, annotations, elaborations, or other modifications which, as a whole, represent an original work of authorship, is a ‘derivative work’.”. The scope of derivative work for software is not certain. In the United States, the appellate courts have three different tests for “derivative work” and few cases have been decided relating to software on this issue. The GPLv2 also includes a reference to “collective work” which is difficult to interpret. “Collective work” under United States copyright law means “a work, such as a periodical issue, anthology, or encyclopedia, in which a number of contributions, constituting separate and independent works in themselves, are assembled into a collective whole.” These provisions of GPLv2 have not been interpreted in a court so the scope of these obligations is not clear. . The Free Software Foundation has published FAQs on the GPL which addresses this issue http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#GPLInProprietarySystem. If you intend to use XAware 5 for distribution with your proprietary software, you should discuss these issues with your attorney and consider the alternative of obtaining the XAware Software under a Commercial License. For more information on this alternative see www.xaware.com
I am a current customer of XAware 4.5... what happens when you move to open source?
XAware, Inc. will continue to support current customers of prior XAware software releases under the terms of existing license and support agreements.
Why has XAware, Inc. elected to make its industry leading Data Integration software available to the Open Source Community in the form of the XAware 5 Open Source Project?
Open source has proven to be a powerful model for driving the rate of innovation and productive use of software through the opening and sharing of source code, engaging in collaborative development with a community of talented open source developers worldwide, partnering with other open source projects, and participating in the open source ecosystem. Infrastructure software and tools in general, and data integration software in particular, are well suited for the open community innovation and participation. XAware, Inc., recognizing the value the community can bring in driving innovation and use of its software, determined that open source was the best way to pursue its mission of becoming the world’s most popular way of integrating data and applications.
What will be different about the open source product vs. the previous proprietary product?
The XAware Development Community will drive a larger and richer set of features, especially add-in components, adapters, connectors, XML schema navigators and use cases, as well as better tested, better-documented and higher quality software. You can expect a higher rate of innovation and a better quality product than has or would have been possible using a proprietary software model. Join the community at www.xaware.org
What is the development process for the XAware Open source Project?
The XAware project uses an Agile Software methodology built around Scrum and 2 week iterations or code sprints. Our community team works off of a published backlog of stories (features, bugs, small bits of functionality, documents, interoperability tests, etc) with a goal of keeping the system as close to fully functional as possible at all times. Tested software is classified as either Stable, Beta, or GA. Stable builds include many passing unit and system tests but are feature deficient and not exhaustibly tested. Beta builds are features complete, document complete, and undergoing additional system level and field testing. GA software is fully tested, documented, and released for use in production environments. Current Development Status can be found at: http://www.xaware.org/content/view/18/63/
How can I contribute to the project?
There are several ways to make a contribution and get in on the ground floor of a new growing open source project . Participating in the forums, identifying bugs and providing code to fix bugs are good ways to get involved. To find out more and to start contributing, go to www.xaware.org
