Bruce,

I have tested pooling parameters on my local database, and verified that the Apache Commons components seem to be working as expected. The key is to establish the pooling parameters according to the following documentation:

http://commons.apache.org/dbcp/configuration.html

The pooling components require you to enter a "validationQuery", which is sent to the database at selectable times to verify a connection is still active, before a connection is handed back to the application. You can select whether to run the validationQuery when a connection is grabbed from the pool, when it is returned to the pool, or at specified intervals.

I'm attaching an SQLBizDriver that I used for my test, showing the pooling parameters. You'll need to supply a validationQuery that runs properly on your database. I'm using "select 1", which works fine on MySQL, but doesn't work on Oracle ("select 1 from dual" works there). I also configured the validation to run every 15 seconds. You can adjust this to a longer interval if desired. The validation query not only tests the connection, it also lets the database know the connection is still active. So the validation interval should be less than the database connection timeout.

Note that the xa:validationQuery element must be manually entered into the BizDriver. Many of the pooling parameters show up in a list to select from, but that one doesn't. We'll get it added to the list in the near future.

Please give this a try and let us know if it works as desired on your system.

Thanks!

-Kirstan
