Patrick, to change the authentication method, you would need to update the Spring Security configuration in WEB-INF/applicationContext-acegi-security.XML to use a different "authentication provider". I have not done this before, but there is good documentation on the Spring site at this location for LDAP configuration:

Basically, you supply the appropriate provider, such as LdapAuthenticationProvider instead of the default DaoAuthenticationProvider. The specific provider that you configure then determines a number of other required Spring beans that need to be configured. The article describes the options, which are plentiful due to the large number of security environments out there. Even within LDAP there are quite a few options.

If you're using something other than LDAP, you'll need to find a provider for that environment. Spring supports a good number of providers, so there's a good chance they have what you need.

Configuring security is not trivial for most of us mortals. You should plan on ample time to learn how the provider works and to get it configured properly. Good luck, and we'd love to hear how you progress with this. I'm sure other users would be interested as well.
